Nido di Gufi

Todi Through Our Eyes

Discover the Timeless Beauty of Todi, Umbria

There are places you visit.

And then there are places that quietly become part of you. Todi, in the heart of Umbria, is one of those places.

Perched high on an ancient hill, surrounded by silver olive groves, vineyards and rolling countryside that glows honey-gold at sunset, Todi isn't somewhere you rush through with a checklist in your hand. It is a town that gently invites you to slow down, breathe deeply and rediscover the simple pleasures of Italian life.

It's where mornings begin with the scent of fresh cornetto drifting from the bakery beneath centuries-old stone buildings. Where church bells echo across the valley. Where neighbours stop to chat in the piazza and shopkeepers greet you with a smile, even if it's your very first visit.

When we first discovered Todi, we didn't simply fall in love with its beautiful medieval streets or its remarkable history. We fell in love with the way it made us feel.

That feeling became Nido di Gufi. Not simply a place to stay in Todi — but a place to belong, even if only for a little while.

Why Visit Todi?

There are countless beautiful towns in Italy. But Todi has something quietly different.

Unlike many famous destinations that feel designed around tourism, Todi remains a living Umbrian town. People still come to the piazza to meet friends. Children race through cobbled streets after school. Families gather every evening for the traditional passeggiata, strolling beneath medieval palaces as the last light settles across the rooftops.

Here, you're not watching Italian life. You're invited to become part of it.

This is one of the reasons visitors return to Todi again and again. Not because there is more to see. But because there is more to feel.

The History of Todi

More Than 2,500 Years of Stories

One of the reasons people fall in love with Todi is that history is woven into everyday life.

Long before Rome became an empire, the Umbrians settled this hilltop, believing it to be a sacred place. Later, the Romans transformed it into the prosperous city of Tuder, and many traces of that remarkable past can still be explored today.

As you wander through Todi's medieval streets, you'll pass Renaissance palaces, hidden churches, ancient Roman cisterns and buildings that have stood for centuries.

But history here isn't hidden behind museum glass. It's beneath your feet. It's the worn stone steps polished smooth by generations. It's the tiny alleyway. It's the unexpected courtyard where silence replaces the bustle of modern life.

These are often the moments our guests remember most.

Piazza del Popolo: The Heart of Todi

Every walk eventually leads to Piazza del Popolo, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Italy. We simply think of it as Todi's living room.

In the morning you'll find locals collecting coffee before work. By lunchtime cafés spill into the sunshine. As evening arrives, conversations linger over wine, children play beneath the cathedral steps and visitors discover something that Italy does better than anywhere else.

The joy of doing absolutely nothing.

Order a spritz. Watch the changing light dance across the Duomo. Listen to the bells. Stay longer than you planned.

You'll understand why people fall in love with this town.

Experience the Seasons in Todi

One of the greatest joys of visiting Todi is that every season tells a different story.

In spring, the countryside bursts into blossom and the hills become impossibly green.

Summer brings open-air concerts, festivals, long dinners and warm evenings spent wandering through illuminated piazzas.

Autumn is perhaps our favourite season. Olive harvests begin, vineyards glow amber and local restaurants celebrate truffles, mushrooms and the incredible flavours of Umbrian cuisine.

Winter transforms Todi into a peaceful Christmas village filled with lights, markets and the comforting aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

There is never a wrong time to visit Todi. Only another reason to return.

Slow Living in Todi

Life here is beautifully ordinary.

The store owner knows every customer by name. They remember your favourite coffee order. The fruit and vegetable stalls overflow with whatever has been picked that morning.

You might spend an hour choosing olive oil, another chatting with a local artisan, and an afternoon with no plans at all except finding the perfect place to watch the sunset.

In Todi, slowing down doesn't feel indulgent. It simply feels natural.

Why Nido di Gufi Calls Todi Home

We could have created Nido di Gufi anywhere. We chose Todi.

Not because it's famous. But because every time we return through its ancient gates, we feel ourselves exhale.

Our hope is that you'll experience this town not as a tourist rushing from one attraction to the next, but as a temporary local.

Wake slowly. Browse the little alimentari. Ask us where we love to eat. Visit the weekly market. Follow the quiet streets rather than the obvious ones. Watch the sunset from the town walls. Stay for one more glass of Umbrian wine. Leave with stories rather than souvenirs.

Because that's the Italy we fell in love with. And it's the Italy we're honoured to share with you at Nido di Gufi.
